Technical visit to Ryvita

On the evening of Wednesday 4th October, the Wessex section of the IMC visited the Poole based Ryvita production facility for a tour conducted by Ian Trew, Ryvita's Engineering Manager.  Ryvita are part of the Associated British Foods Group and have been making crisp bread since 1925 and have exports to over 85 countries.  Ryvita's programme of Total Quality Management and best practice management has forged a new outlook to manufacturing with many new products.

The tour was also co-organised by Cevn Vibert, MES Business Manager for Silchester Control Systems Ltd who have been working closely with Ian and his team to complete a large scale real-time and historical business reporting systems solution for the site.  Silchester were selected to provide a solution across all the lines that would bring the data from sensors, through the programmable controllers, into supervisory computers and out across the network as useful knowledge.

The tour consisted of access to the four main preparation lines and coinciding ovens, the line for the 'minis' range, interconnecting transportation systems, analysis and packaging.  Each group of four visitors were guided through the whole manufacturing process by a Ryvita Engineer, paying particular attention to the control equipment functionality and culminating in the newly upgraded control room.

This visit was both eye-opening and informative and gave an insight into the technicalities and challenges posed in modern food manufacture.  The Wessex section would like to thank Ian and his team for their excellent organization and their efforts in making the evening possible.  Thanks also go to Cevn for co-ordinating with Ryvita on behalf of the Wessex Committee.

IMC Wessex Golf Day 2007

On august 31st, the 2007 IMC Wessex section Golf Day was held at Bramshaw Golf Club in the New Forest, on The Manor Course.  It was well attended with companies such as Dresser Flow Solutions, Able Instruments, Emerson Process Management, VEGA Controls and Pepperl & Fuchs all entering teams.

The Team Trophy 2007 was won by Glenn Kemmery of Dresser who will be defending their title in 2008.  The individual Trophy 2007 was won by Simon Smith of Able Instruments, who will be defending his title in 2008.  The Longest Drive was won by Paul Reeve of Aler Kvaerner playing for Team Pepperl and Fuchs.  The Nearest the Pin was won by Robin Short of Dresser.

£105 was donated to Southampton Hospital for the intensive care unit for babies, for which the IMC received an extremely grateful thank you letter.

The Princess Anne Hospital contains both a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) & Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).  The NICU provides specialist care to sick term and pre-term (premature) newborn babies.  It is one of the largest neonatal units in the country treating around 600 sick babies a year.  The purpose-built unit, which was refurbished in 2006, has been specially designed as a bright, welcoming and spacious environment for babies and their families.

The date for the 2008 event has been agreed at 23rd May, once again at Bramshaw Golf Club, The Manor Course.  It is looking good for 2008 with only 3 team slots left.

There is a new Trophy for 2008 competition.  The Chairman's CUP has been included for the best accumulated par 3 holes.

The IMC Wessex section would like to issue a hugh thank you to James Bridgland (IMC Wessex Southampton Liaison Officer) for the massive effort taken in arranging the event and for the charitable donation which concluded from it.

If anyone is interested in attending the 2008 event, please contact James.  Details are available from the main IMC website, within the Wessex Section

Thermal Imaging

On Wednesday 13th June, the Wessex Section of the IMC conducted a technical seminar in Infra-red Temperature Measurement and Thermal Imaging.

This informative workshop is one of a series of evening events that are offered by the Wessex Section of the Institute of Measurement and Control.  The evening provided a relaxed setting for socialising, networking and discussions about the presentation.

Michael Miller conducted the seminar and has worked in instrumentation for over 30 years, having served his apprenticeship with the CEGB at Poole and Fawley power stations.  He has since worked in several different industries in varying capacities, from Technical Officer with the CEGB at their Research Labs in Marchwood to sales engineer with CRL.  He has also worked in the petrochemical industry in the Middle East.  Sixteen years ago he formed his own company, M Squared Instrumentation, providing instrument services and sales to all branches of industry, particularly pharmaceutical.

The talk consisted of:-

      1.  Theory and principles of infra-red non-contact temperature measurement

      2. Types of sensor and systems

      3. Hand-held devices

      4. Fixed and automation systems

      5. Best practise, applications, limitations and how to overcome potential problems

      6. Thermal imaging and line scanners - It has more potential than you might think.

The event was well attended, with over 15 people enjoying the talk and concluding buffet.  It was particularly interesting to try out various thermal imaging devices during the evening.  The IMC Wessex Section would like to thank Mike for his time in providing a thoroughly interesting and informative evening.
