The Institute operates a semi-formal technical information service on a local basis. Technical Information Officers (TIOs) are appointed by Local Sections and are normally retired academics with continuing strong links with their university departments and libraries.

TIOs act as a first point of contact in the Institute for those seeking help in identifying sources of information relating to the science and technology of measurement and its applications.

They assist enquirers in the location of, and gaining access to, appropriate sources of information for their specific needs. Initial contact with a TIO is free of charge but if the work involved is considerable then a TIO might negotiate a fee with the enquirer.
