Top University’s Student Wins the 2009 Teesside Instrument Engineers Prize Print

Teesside_Uni_09_Awards_webTeesside University recently received the Times Higher Education Award which, using a wide range of criteria, designated it the University of the Year. The University’s part time BEng degree in Instrumentation and Control is very well supported - commended by students and employers alike and accredited by the Institute of Measurement & Control. Pictured in November after receiving the Teesside Instrument Engineers Award for best all round final year performance, is Mr Patrick Pisani (centre) together with the University Vice Chancellor & Chief Executive, Professor Graham Henderson (right) and Chairman, InstMC Teesside Section, Mr David Otterson (left).

 
The Leo James Award 2009 Print

University of Surrey student, Mr Yalun Xu, was presented with the InstMC Surrey & Sussex Section’s ‘Leo James Award’ on 18th November 2009. This prize, for academic achievement, consists of: a prize cheque and one year’s student membership of the Institute of Measurement & Control. It is awarded to the student with the best performance in Linear Systems Analysis at the second stage of the undergraduate degree programme and who is under 30 years of age at the start of the academic year.

The intention of the Leo James Award is: 'to stimulate the interest of young engineers in Control Engineering as well as in the activities of the Institute.' Leo James was a founder member of what was formerly the Gatton Section (now Surrey & Sussex) who bequeathed a sum of money to this Section to be retained as a fund for this worthy purpose.

2009 Presidential Address and Learned Awards Evening Print

Over sixty Institute members and guests attended the 2009 Presidential Address and Learned Awards Evening, on 22 September at the Royal Society, London. President Bill Bardo’s thought provoking address, ‘Whither Autonomy’, dealt with the interplay between man and machine, the progression towards enhanced machines with greater capabilities, and the irrevocable way these developments will shape society.

Royal Academy of Engineering ERA Foundation Entrepreneurs Award Print

This award of £40,000 from The Royal Academy of Engineering has been made possible by the generous support of the ERA Foundation. A prize fund has been established to identify entrepreneurial researchers, working in UK universities, in the field of electro-technology, who are at an early stage in their career.
